New Marriage Law : ウィキペディア英語版 | New Marriage Law The New Marriage Law (also First Marriage Law, ) was a civil marriage law passed in the People's Republic of China on May 1, 1950. It was a radical change from existing patriarchal Chinese marriage traditions, and needed constant support from propaganda campaigns. It has since been superseded by the Second Marriage Law of 1980. ==Origins== Marriage reform was one of the first priorities of the People's Republic of China when it was established in 1949. Women's rights was a personal interest of Mao Zedong's, (further proving from his quote: "Women hold up half the sky." 〔https://books.google.com.hk/books?id=ftv7ks-Ehq0C&pg=PA558&lpg=PA558&dq=Mao+Zedong+Woman+hold+up+half+the+sky&source=bl&ots=-1yWJWMidt&sig=V9WSXhk-1KGDIY-qoKff9qwYgrg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CDQQ6AEwBDgKahUKEwinobXigprJAhVIi5QKHW54AWE#v=onepage&q=Mao%20Zedong%20Woman%20hold%20up%20half%20the%20sky&f=false〕) and a common issue for Chinese intellectuals since the New Culture Movement in the 1910s and 1920s. Chinese marriage up until this time was often arranged or forced, concubinage was commonplace, and women could not seek divorce.〔
